The Eberhart Experiment

I've wondered what is more impressive, their sense of smell, or reaction time. Something pretty impressive about a deer hearing the whisper of a string releasing an arrow @ about 300 fps and having the ability to react and slip out of harms way.

Another thing people really don't give them credit for is their eyesight. Its a LOT better than people give them credit for.

I will say this with 100% honesty.

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I see a big whitetail buck in the woods I feel truly honored just to see him. For me, it's not even about killing him. Its truly awesome just to be in his presence because I fully know just how bad he doesn't want to be seen.....I think that's why I like to hunt them, just to see them and the older I get the more I appreciate every big buck encounter.

He claims he hasn’t been winded in 17 years. Pretty amazing claim
"want to know how I know you're full of shit"

My last 2 sits i've been busted by a mature doe when there is zero freaking reason they should have detected me. Wind right, entry right, sitting still.. Makes me wonder what my neighbors have been doing to have them all wound up. Have not shot a doe since i bought the place in '21. Some of these smart ol hags need shot because they are onto me.

I'm sure i'm just a week or 2 away from deer acting near suicidal again..

He lost all creditability with me when he said that. Actually, that's when I stopped listening to his nonsense.
He also claims he can do #2 in a bag while in a tree. He hunts out of a saddle. This claim is more sensational to me. I won’t be analyzing this claim. My hunt is over when nature calls. That’s not changing

Get the winter bibs you won’t need the paper bag

For all of my law enforcement career our K-9 handlers would routinely get me to run tracks for them, putting my hunting experience and GSP experience to good use. I tried that spray on scent spray a couple of times as well as a scent free suit. Dog got me every time.

I was going to reference this exact thing.

You're always letting off scent via the following. Even if your clothes don't smell...
Your breath
Perspiration
Skin oils and bacteria
Hair and exposed skin

Clean clothes ---> sealed in tote --> you sit in your truck and get all the scent from your truck on your skin, hair, hands, body, etc. --> get to your spot and get out of the truck still smelling like your truck --> put on clean clothes, but your skin, hair, and hands all smell like your truck --> deer cuts your track and runs off.

These are things that can't be covered or contained. You might have a smaller scent profile, but at the end of the day, your breath alone has a distinct smell that will trigger a deer. I'm not gonna tell you how to spend your money, but I always tell people to quit chasing the "scent free" lifestyle and just play the wind. Switch to saddle hunting. That gives you the most flexibility to go into a different tree if the wind isn't ideal or switches.

You can't trick their noses. Same way drug smugglers can't trick the dog noses.

So his big thing is full activated carbon coverage over the issues and areas you identified. So full activated carbon face mask that your breathing through. Per him 40% of human scent is coming out your head so your covering up everything but your eyeballs and cheeks. He says that’s where many fail on their systems. That’s the theory he laid out anyway. Theoretically it all makes sense to me. I’m going to give his system a good shake and see if there is anything to it at all. I have hunted for 20 years with no regard whatsoever to anything but wind direction so I have a handle on that part, how that works and what to expect regarding getting winded.

There are two ingredients to successful whitetail hunting:

1. Location
2. Time in the stand
I don’t have the luxury of time in the stand anymore so call me a - right time in the stand guy. Having a 1 and 3 year old will do that. Your post hits upon a topic and why this whole deal caught my attention, lots of my best spots can only get hunted on specific winds. Imagine if I could hunt those on any wind?

Doesn't Eberhart also hunt super high out of a tree pretty much exclusively? Like 30+ feet up? I think I read that a long time ago. Always wondered if that was more important than his scent free shenanigans regarding deer not smelling him
I think this is an important thing to asterisk. He does like being high. I was going to go back and review his writings but 20-30’ was my recollection. I’m more of a 14-25’ guy so this could be key. My expectation is to get winded just like normal.
