Temp. and altitude

So this week the forecast for where I'm gonna camp is 74 and 39 deg. This town is at 8500ft and we will be camping at 9500ft. I have read for every 1000ft can mean a decrease in temp of 6-8 deg. Does this hold true?

For some reason I was thinking the difference is roughly 3 degrees. Either way the temp will be way better than it has been in Montana all of July.

I always thought it was 1 degree per 300 feet

If you go to noaa.gov you can navigate a map to the location/altitude you'll be at and get the forecast for there.

My late Grandfather was very into the adiabatic lapse rate. He always said 3 degrees per 1000 ft in elevation. I'm sure it varies with certain atmospheric conditions but I think its a pretty good rule of thumb.

Generally 4 degrees less for every 1000 feet you ascend.
