Tactical pants for hunting

I have Kuiu Attack and Tiburon pants. The hip zip is about 8" long on both sides. I live in western Colorado where climbing 1000'-200' vertical feet or more is common during a hunt and I'm a sweat hog. For 'active' hunting situations it's extremely helpful.

Coupled with their zip off/on base layers, its a game changer. Climb with the base layer off and the zips open, stay cool. Get to a spot where you are going to sit, and zip on the base layer without having to take your boots off.

I have not worn cotton or cotton blend pants for hunting, or any other outdoor activity, for a long, long time. That is mainly because of drying times while wearing and how cotton fabric feels when wet. Has anything changed?

The blended BDUs definitely dried faster than the 100%(ish) cotton blue jeans, but not as fast as 100% synthetic. I figure it will likely be a trade off but not nearly as expensive as the hunting branded stuff

If you can find a pair on ebay or amazon, the knock off dri fire pants are pretty nice. I have a pair of Sitka Timberline, Born Primitive Op assault pants and numerous other hiking pants that I interchange. CQR is also a decent brand off of amazon that I have used. I usually use the sitka pants when it's below freezing since they are a little heavier. It's all about comfort and if you want ones that dry fast. The bdu pant don't exactly do that and needless to say I got good at patching the crotch in my issued pants years ago since there isn't any give to them.

I don't know why guys get so caught up on price. If you spend $100-$150 on a pair of pants that will last 10+ years, are they really that "expensive"? I have had my attacks for probably 5 years now. I hunt in them, and wear them to work often during pants season. They are still darn near like new. I have already gotten my money's worth out of them and they are still going strong.

I normally don't get caught up. But I would probably use the less costly pants for work. mtmuley

The 5.11 are nowhere close to attacks especially for hunting in.

I think its important for making purchasing decision on this topic that a manufacturers pants are not the same from the base to most expensive. 5.11 and tru-spec both have at least a dozen different models so you cant compare a $20 set of CQRs to mid set of 5.11 or high end models of truspecs. Same holds true for comparing to attacks to base tactical pants: apples to oranges. Since i like to walk through woods and prarie (places with burrs, prickers and pokey things)Truspec xpeditions are on par with but likely a better all-around hunting pant than the attacks for majority of places I hunt and they are closer price points. Research before you buy, there are a lot of improvements in clothing and materials in last few years.

I did do a lot of research. And I trust the recommendations of long time members here that have used the gear in question. Good to have options. mtmuley

Well, both brands came in and were too large. Too baggy in the seat and crotch. Going to have to return them and get a smaller size (waist and length). Both have some features that I like better than the other, so I will want to wear them both in the field for a while before deciding which one to go forward with for future purchases

Yep. I’ve used them a lot and I’m not a fan for hunting. I’d rather go with good jeans or Carhartts if I was going to wear cotton (which I actually do a lot). Ariat rebar jeans make pretty damn good hunting pants for dry weather. Kuiu or wool when I need to deal with rain and snow.

I like to wear the light weight nylon ones that you can zip off the bottom and they turn into shorts. You can usually find good deals at REI or Sierra Trading Post.

I ended up with the 5.11 Stryke pants. They cost a few bucks more than the Tac Lite, but fit me better through the stride.

Funny, but someone also “gave” me a pair of BDUs in good shape a couple of days ago as well, so I should be set for a while. Will eventually try out some of the nicer hunting pants, but have to have priorities for now
