With limited vacation at work, I have to skip out on my annual spring bear hunt in Montana this May. The reason for this is a planned archery elk hunt in Colorado. Thinking about picking up a bear tag for that hunt. That way if we have trouble locating elk, I can still keep my spirits up looking for a bear. Anyone with experience in SW Colorado think that picking up a bear tag is a waste of money? Is there a good bear population around Durango/Pagosa Springs? It was a hard decision to drop the bear hunt in MT this spring, but I'll never kill an elk if I never go after them. Any info is appreciated.

I always grab the tag....with my luck, if I don't have the tag, I'll see the animal within easy range and I'll be kicking myself in the arse the whole rest of the trip
