Greetings again, I am curious what the experienced late season cow/calf hunters opinions are for bringing a spotting scope along in the back pack, or would a set of binos be sufficient?. Based on all the e-scouting it appears that much of the area is open. I am looking at a couple units with near historical 50/50 draw odds for non-resident. I am planning my list for primary gear to purchase(really the only piece I don't own) and part of me says no it is not necessary. The only reason I can think of is using the spotter for finding distant tracks or feeding sign in the snow. This could be my first ever elk hunt based on the draw.

Thanks in advance

Brian

I wouldn’t buy one for the hunt but if I had one I’d throw it in. I’d make sure I had the best binos I could afford and get a tripod for them long before I’d get a spotter for that hunt.

All depends on where you are hunting and how you hunt. I use a spotter from the truck a lot, but rarely take it in my day pack. Second above... I'd have good binos on a tripod before a spotter.

I agree with the above. You don't really need a spotter for a cow hunt, I've taken mine a few times but usually leave it in my truck.

I have one but have never used it on a cow hunt. Where we're at, late season cows are grouped up in large herds that wouldn't require a spotting scope. Would be a beneficial tool if you're trying to judge a bull from a distance. Good binos are a necessity.

Good binos. Not always but usually, late cow hunts are looking for herds of elk, not single cows. The bulls will be easy to pick out.
