Starting later today, they are calling for extreme cold with possible exploding trees and frost quakes. Never heard of either, but with the predicted temps and wind chill, I believe it

Another 3-4 inches overnight. We're past the labrador's backs in the woods. The ground blind is about 2/3 covered up. Big winds and bigger drifts.

And now the trees are gonna explode.

In a galaxy long ago, I use to ice fish on Lake Champlain at night for walleye and sauger. The temps could hit -25 to -35. The first couple times we heard these booms coming from heavy woods on shoreline. WTH was that! Middle of night, in ice shack with wood stove and bunks it got crazy how loud it was bouncing off mountains. Then a local laughing told us and BTW stay out of woods! It was bit unnerving in middle of nowhere.
