Shiras Moose Hunt - A lot of firsts...

Impressive feat solo! Congrats! I weighed a mature 50 inch Shiras moose we helped harvest this year in Colorado and here's what I learned front and rear quarters bone in are nearly identical at 95lbs and 94lbs each skinned and lower bones cut off. The head and cape weighed in at 110lbs together and 50lbs and 60 lbs split up. The remaining loose moose meat backstraps tenderloins and neck was 75 lbs

Congratulations! What a load of meat and antlers! Way to get it done solo at the start although I'm sure the help was very welcome once it arrived.

Sounds like you had it planned out well that even without help you could have gotten it done though.

Any pics of the big one you guys got? That’s great intel for actual weight for a big, mature one too.

Once back at camp, we got the meat hung up. We grilled up some fresh meat that night, paired with some instant mashed potatoes and were loving it! The wife and kids arrived the next morning and we soaked up the day. The kids were all pumped. We broke down camp the following morning which was a good chore. Lots of gear and items that we ended up not needing or using. It was a busy day with stopping by the CPW to get it registered, dropping the hunting rig and gear back at our property in southern, CO, dropping the skull and hide back with the the taxidermist and then finally heading back to Denver. It was nice to have the rest of the week to prepare and put away some meat, get gear cleaned up and organized again, and simply relax. We enjoyed a friends 40th in Gunnison the following weekend, and I brought two slabs of backstrap to try side by side - one from the moose and the other from last season's oryx. Both were crowd pleasers, and I am thankful for all of the meat we now have stacked up in the freezer.

Now it's time to finish putting up stuff from the garden and getting some roasted green chile ready to get us through winter. IMG_5972.jpg

Man what an incredible experience and a beautiful animal. Currently sitting through my last day of work before flying out for elk near there this weekend, and reading up on adventures like this has the stoke level through the roof. Congrats on an awesome harvest and lifetime memory.

Right on! Great bull and story! I’m just finishing off the last of my first shoras moose! Delicious!
