What do you do with them? I don't have much experience with shad. I've just always associated shad with being a bait fish.

Put them back. They are great catfish bait. These specific shad are hickory and American shad. They come from the ocean and run up the rivers to spawn in the spring. They are like baby tarpon with forked tails and broad bodies. They are the hardest fighting 16" fish I've ever caught.

They are great crab bait as well because they are stinky.

This is the James river in Richmond, VA. No secret spot, you can drive by any time in April or May and see 100's of people fishing.
