Hoping for some recommendations. As far as SE AK I’ve been fishing around Kodiak, Petersburg, and Yakutat. Each place was great. Never have I gone with kids in tow (Next summer they’ll be 13 and 10). I’d like to take the 4 of us and do a self guided-ish trip.

I don’t want to pay a premium for 5 or 6 days of fishing as that is too much fishing for the kids. I think 3 days of fishing would be great and 2-3 days of exploring. Maybe a sightseeing tour to a glacier or similar.

Not sure if there is a lodge that accommodates or if we should just snag a hotel and rent a vehicle for a few days and a boat for a few days.

I’m thinking POW has plenty to explore and enjoy but I’ve never been.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

There is tons to see in Ketchikan and on POW. Check run timing for fishing, many of the streams and lakes on the island see zero fishing pressure. Also ops to do all sorts of ocean fishing, endless logging roads to drive, etc. Downside... its wet and can be miserable for days on end.

Cordova is another option, but you're stuck on 26 miles of roads, fishing can be great, not sure about boat rental, but I'm sure there is a place. Weather is similar...

Valdez is another, but less DIY opps unless later in the summer when the silvers/pinks are in.

All places you could wear out your arms catching pinks/silvers in August. If the kids are into fishing they'll get tired of hauling them in. :)

Some places you can target a pink run. They aren’t as big but some rivers get big runs and can be fun fishing. Slivers would be a lot of fun but may take more time and patience.

Trout and Dolly fishing in some areas with salmon running can be incredible also.

Cordova can be fun but more of a commercial fishing town than sport fishery. Some stuff available though. A really nice bakery. Limited vehicle rentals and I don’t know of any boat rentals. Plenty of hiking trails. The slivers run late August and September. It rains a bunch those two months though.

A friend of mine goes to Soldotna and enjoys it. It can be pretty busy though during the Sockeye run.

Plenty of other places to go and consider.

POW to Valdez you can find plenty of action. We just got back from Sitka, sea was rough but the fishing was very good. I started going to POW in High school, so fifty years ago. My last trip there was probably 22 or 23 years ago. More people live on the island but there is still a lot of great fishing on small streams. Think august for silvers.
