SD - North Perkins County

Is anyone familiar with the north unit in Perkins County for deer? I was able to go check out the land this weekend as an early scouting trip since I drew tags and am new to the area. Is there a secret to finding whitetails in this area? I was able to spot a decent amount of deer, but all mule deer. I know it's early, so I'm hoping to make a return trip before the season starts. I will be hunting public land, so I'm hoping the whitetails don't stay on all the private ground where the crops are.

I hunt a county next to there. I find that the mule deer stay in the ceader draws and open country. The whitetails favor the cottonwood brushy bottoms. I seldom see mule deer and whitetail in the same location, the same area will hold both of it has both habitats.

Thanks, I'll have to see if anything like this is available on public ground. I can't say I even seen much for cedar draws in the grasslands. Hoping to get back closer to season to look again.

Google earth will show you. Cedar draws will be Mule deer habitat. Look for more brushey areas with cotton wood trees for the Whitetails.

Picture of the whitetail shows some of the habitat you should be looking for. The second picture shows me getting ready to drop the hammer on a bedded muley buck as soon as he stands up. Notice the weather change. In less than 24 hrs it dropped 50 degrees and snowed about 8 inches. These pictures were taken about a mile apart. Bring tire chains.
