So my son bought a Howa 22-250 (not impressed so far) and it doesnt shoot well 2" groups with 3 kinds of ammo. He wants to switch scopes to make sure that the scope isn't the problem. I have an older vortex that is a 50mm scope I have never used. I bought it to put on my 17Rem AR but it is dialed in so good I never switched scopes. So what height rings will we need? I have never mounted a 50mm scope. Will mediums work?

Depends on the barrel contour, with a standard profile mediums will usually work. Varmit or a carbon barrel may require highs. It also depends on the ring type, something mounted on a rail will sit a little higher than a one piece (something like Talleys)

Lows, mediums, highs aren't always the same dimension.. Like was stated there are a lot of factors that go into fit. Barrel contour, tube diameter, base height, cant, etc all play a part.

I don't know what base/mounts you have. These can make a huge impact on the ring height.

I use EGW one piece bases on all of my rifles that will take them.
EGW bases are kinda tall. But it allows me to use low rings for up through a 56mm objective.
Again, depends on barrel contour and such.

EGW 20MOA one piece base and their low Keystone line of ring fits the Sightron SII 10-50X60 scope on my wife's Savage 110FP.
223 Rem heavy varmint sized barrel.

I'm not expert here, but I feel like a consistent 2" group is likely not a scope issue. My experience in the past with Howa's is that they are very particular with ammo. Personally, I'd try a couple more loads first. That said, usually mediums will work with a 50mm, but it depends.
