Rifle Cartridges for Hunting

45/70, 375 H&H, 300 Win mag, 300 WSM, 30-06, 308 Win, 30-30, 7mm Rem mag, 25-06, 6mm Rem, 223, 204 Ruger and of course the 22 long rifle!

Don't have all the rifles anymore, but a pretty good cross-section of rifle cartridges I think. I'm sure I picked up somebody else's rifle and hunted with it a time or two, but these are the rifle cartridges for owned and used for hunting.

Mine is probably a shorter list: 30-06, 30-30, 7mm WSM, 6mmx284, .220 swift, 22-250, 223, 22LR, 17HMR.

The 6mmx284 and the 22-250 are the only ones that I no longer own.

Don't have time for a picture, but current hunting guns/ammo in my safe: 300WSM, 30-06Spr, .308Win, 30-30Win, .270Win, 7mm08Rem, 25-06Rem, .223Rem, .22WMR, .22LR and .357Mag out of a lever gun. 7mmRemMag and .243Win both sold last winter, the 30-06s probably next to go. To broaden the topic a little, I also hunt with 12ga, 20ga.

I've really moved away from the idea of lots of weapons. Took a few shotguns to find the o/u twenty that suits me now (and maybe for good). Also pretty settled on the .308 for anything I could (or want) to afford to hunt with a metallic big game cartridge. Crossbow is perfect for whitetail in the midwest due to long seasons, less competition, and lack of shots past 50 yards anyways.

Yeah, those three .20, .308, crossbow are pretty much all I can see any use for anymore.

Dad told me, 50 years ago, that I could do all my "big game" hunting with just the 30-06, and he was right. I could have.

But I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of the other rifles & cartridges over the years.

.270 Win Sold as Rifle jammed and I lost confidence in it. Nice Cartridge though.
.308 Win. Won in it. Never fired it gave it to my Brother for Christmas one year.

Don't know that I've used that many. Let's see: 338 Win Mag, 30-06, 308, 30-30, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem mag, 7x57, 6.5x06, 6.5x55, 25-06, 243, 223 Rem, 222 Rem 22 Hornet and 22LR.

These day's I use a 30-06 and carry my 6.5x55 along as a back up. Other rifle's I have don't get used a lot anymore. It's hard getting old!
