Rifle Caliber Recommendation - 270/308/30-06

For those who have all three or at least two of the trio (270, 308, 30-06), is the recoil in the 30-06 really noticeably more? And it seems that the recoil from a 308 would be similar to the 270. I’d be shooting 145/150-gr bullets in the 270, if I end up with that round, but it seems it would be similar recoil to the 30-06, at least when shooting 150-gr bullets.

Felt recoil is hard to judge as I've never shot them in the same or similar rifles. The 30-06 I've shot were noticably more. The 308 seemed to have the least but was heavier than my 270.

All else being equal the 30-06 will have more. However you could use a 150 grain bullet to lower somewhat. Not a huge difference either way.

Felt recoil will be dependent on so many other variables like weight of rifle, cheek weld, butt pad, etc.

If recoil out of any of the three is possibly an issue, then recoil of all three is an issue. Go down to a 6mm Creed or .243 and use a bullet with your desired terminal ballistics.

All 3 will kill an elk….hit em right where you need to and it won’t be a problem. I’ve killed em with all 3. Bullet choice is really key. I don’t think you could go wrong with any one of them because there are tons of reloading/manufactured ammo choices. .30-06 does get you into some heavier bullet choices as long as the little bit extra recoil doesn’t bother you.

No issue with recoil for me. I commonly shoot 12 ga shotguns and my 7mm Wby Mag. I guess when some people say the 30-06 offers more recoil, that guidance may be for those who don’t tolerate the added recoil well.

Get the caliber/rifle you shoot the best. Any of those calibers would be good as long as you are proficient with it.

Hey guys, I’m currently revamping my current arsenal by dealing away my Weatherby Mark V Fibermark S/S in 7mm Wby Mag along with my Bergara B-14 Hunter Wilderness in 6.5 Creedmoor to pursue a different caliber. I thought I was set on getting a .30-06, but I am now strongly considering a .308 or possibly .270 (since they appear to be ballistically similar out to 300 yards). It seems that a .308 would be a better choice for me than the .270 as most of my shots down south are usually all within 200 yards. This would be primarily for whitetail and hogs, but I was considering the .30-06 in the event I get to go elk hunting, but I did also just get a CVA Scout in .35 Whelen. Which caliber would you go with? I’m likely set on either a Browning A-Bolt or X-Bolt, Remington 700 CDL, or a Bergara B-14 (either the green Hunter model or the Timber model with the walnut stock).

my opinoin is that these 3 calibers are about the same. i was in the same boat and ended up going with the 308 due to the cost and availiablity plus you can size up or down on the bullet weight . i think the popularty of the 308 has surpased 270 and 30/06 and can find ammo anywhere as back 5-6 years ago it was pretty even now not so much
