How many of you have clocked your hunting setup to get a real world (i.e., not IBO) speed? My rig is an Elite Ethos 70lb, 26.5" draw shooting Black Eagle Spartans in the 490gr. range. I'm clocking 246fps with that rig. It seems pretty slow but maybe not in the real world.

What speeds are y'all getting?

I use the EZV bow sight and I can’t say down to the single number but all my sights are based on arrow speed so I know within that 290 to 300 range. Any faster, I would have to insert the next sized sight-insert with a slightly different shaped V to match the holdover rate at specific yardages. I just switched arrows and got new strings so it’s all all still needs shot and sighted in but I’ve used anywhere from 270 inserts up to the 300 depending on my setup that year

With a 26.5 draw it’s going to be difficult to achieve speeds into the 280+ range. I’ve seen deer dodge my wife’s bow at 30 yards at 240 fps. Everyone has their own opinions and needs but i feel like 240 is to slow unless your shooting hogs out of a tree stand.

31.25" DL, pulling 76 lbs with a 466 gr arrow. I get right around 300 out of my Mathews ARC 34 with the smooth Z mods.

I've had antelope "duck" my arrow at 35 yards shooting 300 fps. Speed ain't got much to do with it. If the animal is alert/aware of you the chances of "ducking" goes up significantly.

Notice I said “Dodge” not “Duck”
At 240 they literally spin, jump, and run out of the arrows path. Pretty comical actually. Now at 300 that thing is prolly so loud an F350 would probably duck!

I shot at one once at like 45 bedded. He saw something when I drew, I released and he shot up and was completely out of the spot by the time the arrow impacted empty dirt. That was 300-305 fps.

I do think bow noise makes a huge difference in antelope. I shoot a much heavier bow and arrow for antelope now, and my speed is lower, 280 ish, but my bow is quieter. I rarely have one move now.

A very good hunter I know always told me that 280 is a sweet spot for compound bows. Between broadhead flight, penetration, noise, and trajectory it seems like a great place to be at if your at a 28+ draw length.
