Public Land Parking

Heading out west for the first time this year. Am I allowed to just pull off the side of the road, park and walk in? Or do I have to park in designated area and go in?

What type of road are you on? Interstate, highway, local, forest service, blm?

You can just park & go in most USDA-FS areas. Off a main Hwy or some busy places,they frown on off road parking. Cops that is.
But some places you get funneled to one trailhead or parking spot.
Or access is limited.
State & BLM have some different rules from USFS.
