provisional patent application ?

Anyone filed for a provisional patent application? It is $75.00 and kinda locks in your patent idea... Then w/in 1 year must file the main patent schematics... If so, what time frame until you heard back saying it was accepted?

Filed for a complete patent in February 2010 and have been told it will not be decided on until sometime in 2012. Now am submitting even more adendums to it, so who knows when I will hear back. This is a business methodology patent, not a product patent, so there may be differences in timing between the two types of patents.

Thanks Fin, I did a provisional app for a product (collapsible camp stove) several months ago - though have not received anything back, yet... I'll try calling - see if I can get a hold of someone...
Anyone ever filed one of these provisionals? I have heard they can take a while - though not sure how long to wait... or if this is typical for the application. It is not the actual patent filing, from what I understand.
