I am new to the western big game hunting scene and I don't plan on hunting out west this coming season. I know over the last few years Montana has had left over deer & elk combo tags, but I was wondering if applying for points only was worth it? I am looking to just build points this year, so if there are any other must apply states let me know! Thanks!

If I recall Wyoming has elk points only in July time frame for 50 bucks. I cant for the life of me remember any other states that do it the same way.

I would front the money for Colorado points and buy the Wyoming ones as well before loaning Montana money for their limited entry tags. Montana is most usefully as a generally tag state if you want to go every year or often.

WY, UT, and AZ have points only. I believe your too late on AZ elk and deer, have till the middle of the month on UT, and WY is end of the summer.

Nevada has point only options but you will have to put in for a couple years to draw a tag your money is better spent in a state with more game.

I buy points in Wyoming and Utah. Utah points are $10 apiece, but you have to buy a hunting license which is around $65. The license is good for a calendar year so first year I buy it near the deadline and its good for the next year as well.
