Peak-Rut Rifle Season

I'll be hunting next week in a unit in which rifle season starts on the 20th. Does anyone have any experience hunting peak rut with a rifle and advice you're willing to share? Do the elk go silent on opening morning? Will cow mews still draw a bull in as during bow season? All my elk hunts until now have been late season hunts, so I'm pretty green. I'll have two days to scout.
