I killed my first bull ever within a couple hours of first light on opening morning of Eastern Oregon’s second rifle season. Many hours of scouting and learning and preparation paid off. Found him down in an absolute hell hole as soon as dawn came on, made a long, circuitous stalk, ranged him at 252, and that was that.

The pack out was satisfying work.

The country was spectacular.

A few days later, my hunting partner got his turn. Unfortunately, we were dumb and rushed and forgot to take any pictures before we broke down his bull. It was his first ever elk as well.

This was the most challenging and rewarding hunt I’ve ever been on. I’m tremendously grateful for these animals, the beautiful country they live in, and our public lands that we can wander freely through.

Also, a big thanks to a certain member of this forum for the sound advice on hunting this type of country.

Congratulations! Looks like a heck of an adventure, those tough retrieves are always very memorable and enjoyable ......... when they're over. Thanks for sharing those great photos and elk.

That looks like a great looking camp and good work getting down both of those bulls. I saw some fellow hunttalkers post and I agree I didn't know there were parts of Oregon that look like that. Is that eastern Oregon?

Excellent! I was logging in to PM you about your trip. Guess I don’t need to. See many chukars? I’m headed down that way next week with my pointer.

Thanks guys.

Yes. The eastern half of the state is quite arid.
