Opinions on new Pa deer rifle

I own a marlin 1895guide gun in 45-70. It has a fixed 4x scope. Its my timber gun and would be great for a eastern deer hunt.
A lever action with a 4x scope is a great woods deer gun (I keep a 336 up at our cabin for that) but 30-30 is much better cartridge for deer IMO.

I have used the following a lot for PA big woods hunting. Tough to pick if I had to choose just one.

A .308 blr with a 2-7 Leupold, sweet rifle.

Remington 722 in 300 savage, open sights.

Winchester model 70 feather weight in .270 with a 3-9 Leupold

Model 700 Remington in .243 with 3-9 Leupold on it.

Remington 700 in 7mm08 with. 3-9 red field revolution on it.

Remington 700 .223 with a 3-9 Leupold, and 60 grain nosler partitions.

To each his own. I like the thump a 45-70 gives and don't have to worry about meat waste (especially with a 350 grain slug going 1600fps). I will say a 30-30 probably has killed more whitetails than any other round though so you can't go wrong either way personally

I've done the majority of my hunting here in the woods with a 30-30 and a 25/06. More recently having moved more to hunting field edges, I use either a 7mm or 300 for shots out to ~350yds

I'd be looking at the following, but everyone has their own likes and wants. Hard to go wrong with anything in 308-260-7mm-08 -6.5x55 and similar. Just about any deer rifle will get the job done though, so buy what will make you happy.

My tastes
Ruger ultralight
Remington 7
Browning BLR
Remington 7600 carbine

Yes, I like carbines!

Not recoil shy I like wood stocks but really doesn’t matter if it’s not wood. Would like to stay around a grand with scope around 1200. For white tail deer in Pa. the longest shot would be 150 yards bc will be hunting in the woods not field.

How about a Winchester M70 Compact, in .308 Win? It would fit your needs perfectly, it's a well built rifle, smooooth action, wood stock.

I like the Winchester model 70 myself and have 3 a sporter stocked 243, a featherweight 7mm-08 and a deluxe stocked 30-06. I love the safety on the rifle, I can get a positive reading on whether it is on or off even in the dark or with heavy gloves on.
