2020 deer season was a great one. We gained access to a small piece of private land that backed up to 12,000 acres of state forest here in Ohio. Hence the public “ish” land in the title

Through all of the COVID mess I didn’t step foot on this property until opening morning before daylight.

we, my father, cousin, uncle and myself, hiked in through the rain and 38 degree temps. I found a good spot, screwed my tree umbrella into the tree and hunkered down trying to stay dry with a 360 degree view.

After sitting about 30-40 minutes I had a small buck appear about 50 yards below me and I didn’t see him until he was right in front of me. No idea where he came from. I passed and let him go on.

fast forward an hour... was standing and caught movement up to my right. I could see it was a buck but no idea how big. I wasn’t ready to be done hunting and told myself I was going to pass unless it was big. Then he turned his head and I could see 4 points sticking up on one side.... big enough.

He turned his head to look back the way he came which gave me the chance to put the ole ‘93 marlin up and get steady. BOOM! Knocked him down, then he stood back up and started going downhill like he wasn’t hit. I got on him and shot 2 more times hitting him. Needless to say he proceeded to slide 400 vertical feet to the bottom of the hollow. Great.....

I was quite surprised when I walked up to the grown growage 🙂

11 total points and 18” wide

the hunting gods were shining down on me to blindly walk in and harvest such an animal.

Very nice. I’m the same way sometimes: I tell myself that I’m not going to shoot, then I get excited and kill one anyway. I’m glad that yours was a really nice one. I’m sure that the recovery was a real bear, but added to the memories.

Congrats!!
