Hey @5yearcoueshunter, great write-up and that’s a beautiful bull. Seems like a great idea to get away from the roads and hunt it on foot instead of just driving around.
My 13-year-old daughter drew the November youth off-range tag this year. We’ll be coming from California and should have four or five days to hunt. What made you choose that roadless area? Was there something you saw on the map or heard about the area that made you want to focus there?
I could really use any help just getting pointed in the right direction and figuring out where to focus our time. really hoping to make it a fun and memorable time with my daughter. Thanks for sharing the hunt.

I put in for the 70 and older tag and was drawn for the February Hunt. I couldn't make it the first week because I had a family reunion. So my hunt lasted 5 days. I met up with my buddy Jeff and we drove to the place where we were going to set up our camp. We went up to do some glassing on the refuge but did not have any luck seeing Oryx. Thursday we drove all over the west side of the range and at about 3:30 we ran into 9 Oryx but they were on the range side and so we could not shoot. They took off running. We drove about another 50 yards and ran into another heard that had broken horn Oryx and one that had both horns missing and they were on the rand as well. We drove down where we could turn around and saw about 20 more. They were on the range, but we took my decoy and went to the other side of the road. They looked at the decoy and starting walking towards us but then turned around and walked away. I took a deer head and spray panted the head to look like an Oryx. I took a couple 1/2" PVC pipe and wrapped them with black duct tape. We think it worked. When we got back to camp we decided to go and glass the refuge. At the end of the road a Horse trailer and a guy on the horse were putting an Oryx in the back of the truck. This is where we met Terry who had hiked into the refuge and had shot an Oryx. He had to call his friend to help him get the Oryx out of the refuge since you cannot use anything mechanical to take them out(carts). It was a nice male Oryx and his horns were about 35" Terry is the guy holding up the Oryx in the Truck.
Well, we drove for 2 days and saw nothing and ran into some other hunters with the same story. So on Sunday, I was going to hunt half the day and go home. We were driving just before sun up and went down to where we had seen the Oryx the first day. We saw nothing and went to the end of the road and turned to the west. About 1/4 mile in I spooted a Oryx on the right side of the Truck. We stopped and I got set up but forgot to chamber a round in the rifle. So I sent out a click sound and the Oryx was off and running. I tried to shoot him but missed once I put a round in the rifle. Then the Oryx was probably 500 yards+ so we didn't attempt a second shot. We got back in the truck and Jeff asked if I was upset that I didn't get the Oryx. I said I was but it was my fault that I didn't have a bullet in the chamber. I said I was glad that I saw one on our side of the fence and had the opportunity to get a shot off even though I had screwed up in the excitement of the moment. Well, we drove around and came back to the same place an hour later and whole herd was coming down the hill trying to get back on the range. The Oryx with both broken horns made it acroos but we were able to turn the herd back. We drove back to where we turned west and saw the herd. We tried to get setup on them but they moved over the hill. We drove a little further and they we standing around which gave us time to setup and take the shot. This time it was successful. The interesting thing is we were about 100yards from where we had our first opportunity an hour earlier. I call that a God thing because what are the chances of shooting two times within an hour about 100 yards from the first shot for a second chance to harvest an Oryx. I give the praise and glory to God who made it happen.
