New Zealand DIY

I now this is an old thread but I had a question, to hunt stags or fallow deer on public land do it yourself,is it comparable to a general season elk or mule deer tag in the states?

No tags, shoot whatever you feel like.

I've hunted both here in NZ and also in WY and MT on general elk and deer tags on public land and in many ways it is similar. For example you are hunting with a lot of other people, the animals get pressure and the heads are smaller. We have plenty of public land but it can get crowed in popular places at popular times.

But as Kiwi hunter as pointed out there are no tags here. So like general tags there, getting away from the crowds helps but the biggest help I think is local knowledge. Flying by chopper is common for hunting adventures and you have alot of country to access.

Public land fallow bucks and red stags are nothing like the animals offered by hunting safaris.

I recommend looking at tahr hunting, as this is a great adventure and you'll probably see a lot more than deer.
