The Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) law went into effect in 1968. It mostly just something for legal gun owners to complain about at this point. Legality certainly isn't in question. It hasn't been very effective, but suggesting anything new just results in more complaining. That is how we got this as a wedge issue. Politicians won't change it.

I've seen MANY times on the news about how a subject was arrested for a shooting. Mostly gang bangers in the city. We all know there were MULTIPLE laws this person broke with a gun. Make your own list in your mind what they could be, including no valid FOID card. Now that same news story will tell you how that person had been arrested X amount of times previously and was a known gang member. Why weren't they in prison for the other charges? Slap on the wrist, dropped or reduced charges, released with time served, etc. Don't forget the reports of HOW gun crimes were being reported in order to change the graphics on crime to lessen the "visual" on how safe the city actually is.

Sounds like you should run for office on that platform?
1) not everyone arrested is guilty, 2) there is often not a strong criminal case to be made, maybe no witnesses want to talk, maybe the evidence is soft, 3) a FOID violation isn't sufficient to throw someone is jail, and 4) you don't want to pay for jails so they are pretty much full. Nothing changed during my life there and nothing has changed since I left. Everyone supremely confident they have solutions.

Can't run, I'm not crooked enough. I'm sure there are plenty of low level crime people in prison that could be released to make room for the others who actually deserve it. We have plenty of money to waste on piddly shit so we COULD spend it reopening and building new prisons. But then that would create a bad image. Illinois would rather tax and charge people for stupid things than actually try to make it better. Well, they DO make it easier for "undocumented" folks.

80% Of the IL land mass is occupied by good conservative people and they can't stand the government they get out of Springfield and Chicago. Unfortunately, these two cities politics rule the state.
All IL is accomplishing with this stuff is putting a bunch of good gun shops out of business and severely reducing gun & ammo sales by the bigger retailers. Less sales in the state, less tax revenue, less jobs, etc.
IL residents can easily run to any of the adjoining border states which have sensible gun laws and acquire what they want without any of the B.S.

With this bill, only if neighboring states also serialized the ammo. Multiple weapons categorized as assault weapons still would be required to be registered if not already forbidden to purchase. Buying something isn't the issue. It's the possession of that gets hinky.
