Hello everyone! I just picked up this expensive hobby and found the forum. Quick question. How do you send a PM on this platform? I cant seem to figure it out.

Welcome fellow Las Vegan!

Do you ever shoot at Desert Sportsman?

What do you hunt?

I do a lot of small game hunting, like doves and ducks at the Overton Wildlife Mgt area, and then wherever and whatever big game tags I draw.

I have gone to Sportsman’ a few times with buddies who have memberships. Its kind of hard to get in otherwise. They dont even have a waitlist anymore.

As far as hunting im new, but Im hoping and willing to learn all the disciplines. I ended up drawing 151-156 mule deer, any weapon. So Im in the process of figuring that out. haha.

That is cool. I've never hunted those units. Getting your first big game animal solo will be quite a challenge.

If you are not determined to get a trophy, you could probably find a deer slowly driving dirt roads in the early morning and late in the day, be ready to jump out out of your vehicle and step off the "road" and drop to prone or seated for a quick snap shot.

One thing I learned about our NV desert mule deer is they actually prefer the scrubby brushy mid elevations as opposed to the higher mountain or lower desert valleys, hope that helps.

The younger deer tend to be less tough and taste better, as well as easier to find.

Work is slow for me today and I just spent some time looking at Unit 151 on On-X, now I wish I had a tag there, it looks pretty promising. Checker-boarded public BLM/private land with lots of springs and looks like some decent road access to the public portions.

Deer will usually be within one mile of a reliable water source.

When are you going up there? Quail and Chukar season starts October 11, and now I'm thinking I want to go on a bird hunt/scouting trip for possible future big game hunts in that area.

Sadly, the quail/chukar hunting opportunities in Southern NV aren't looking good this year, I have been keeping an eye for them while hiking and dove hunting, and unlike last year which had good numbers, the southern NV populations of game birds seem much poorer this year.

Thats exactly where I was thinking to scout out. All the places that have decent water source. Speaking of the checkerboard BLM/ private area, how does that work for access. Are we allowed to drive/hike through? Some of the checkerboard areas have roads that cross through the units. I assume the roads are fair game to drive on? Can I not shoot if im in BLM but deer is on private?

Nevada is friendlier to the public than some other states, here is the most relevant statute:

"NRS 503.240  Unlawful to hunt, trap or fish upon certain private property without permission.

1.  It is unlawful for any person to hunt, fish in nonnavigable waters or trap upon land which is private property where the person has been warned by the owner or occupant of the property not to trespass in the manner prescribed in NRS 207.200, or where signs are displayed forbidding hunting, trapping or fishing without permission obtained from the owner or occupant of the private property.

2.  Any person using that private property for hunting, fishing or trapping shall comply with the provisions of NRS 207.220."

In other words, if it is not fenced off or marked as private (see NRS 207.200 for how it has to be marked), and its not being used actively to farm and no dwelling on it, its ok.

I will probably head out this weekend, with season starting Oct 5th.

Thats what I was thinking. Thank you!
