Ok I am over here in Utah so I do not get any chances to hunt Whitetail. I have had the privilege of eating a few and do like them and would like to go hunt them some year. I can either do Archery or Rifle. Can a few of you suggest nearby states where I will be able to hunt them on public lands. I would prefer to get my first as a buck but does eat the same as bucks do and probably some times better. ;) So if any of you could give me advice on the close by areas ,( WY, Id, Mt ) so I can start my research that would be great.

Thanks
Matt

I'd suggest Idaho. Easy tags to get and quite a bit of public land in the part of the state (Orofino to Moscow and surrounding areas) where I've seen whitetails. The few landowners I've asked for permission up there have been very accomodating as well. Do you have a boat? I think an awesome trip would be to hunt the rut off of Dworshak Reservoir via boat.

If you are really feeling lucky and are near Cache Valley, you could hunt them there. IIRC they are not protected and can be tagged with a general season deer tag. Not a lot of them and most are along the waterways that are largely private, but they are there...

There aren't whitetail in Utah.....

I second ID, then MT. This it would be easier to get the tags. Obviously I would head more east, KS, MO, AR, IL, IA, WI, MI, to name a few better populated but different regulated states. That is if all I wanted was some whitetail.

I took one off of a WIA in NW Wyoming last year. I also got one in the Medicine Bow N.F. in 2014. Mine was young, but I did see a couple guys with a 140-class buck.

I'd guess that age structure would be better in NW MT or Northern Idaho though.

don't forget about E WA... regarded as the best western whitetail state. We have fantastic deer huting here and all OTC..Message me if you want any info

I would say any of those states are fine options, but from what I know, Wyoming is probably the top dog as far as whitetails of the states mentioned.

Thanks all you are giving me som good info here. I am not limited to the states I listed they are just the closest. But would prefer it not be a 3-4 day drive with the trailer in each way if you know what i mean.
