Mountain Lakes Rainbow Trout

So interesting little tidbit about trout in the high lakes. Many years ago, like 45, my buddy and I were at a pretty little lake in the Cascades of Washington and fishing for dinner. We each kept three fish of the many that we caught. He was using a brown Mepps and I was using a red/white Daredevil. All the fish that he kept were female, all mine were male, he was fishing on the other side of the lake. Maybe a feeding/fighting thing, don't know for sure, has always intrigued me.

For spin gear several spinners in some different colors. I like Panther Martin, Blue Fox, and Rooster Tail. I’ve had good luck on some lakes even with wild trout using power bait.

Not a bad idea to have a few flies to cover your bases. Some high elevation lakes don’t have a lot of aquatic insects. So a couple ant and beetle patterns wouldn’t be bad. A few wooly buggers in black, brown, and olive can look like several things.

Interesting, I was under the assumption all lakes had insects. What do the fish in the lakes void of insects eat?

I said “a lot” of insects not void of all insects.

They eat what is available to them. Minnows, terrestrial insects, etc. some have more abundant aquatic insect life than others.
