Montana late Season Elk

Hi everyone I have never hunted elk but am going to montana this year to hunt mule deer before i come out elk hunting. Next year i am hoping to get my father a general big game combination tag for myself and my father. The only time we are able to go is the week before Thanksgiving has anyone ever had much luck on public land this late in the season? My father is getting older and this would probably be his only western hunt ever he would never go on a guided hunt but i would love for him to shoot an elk. If there's fresh snow, lace up the boots and try to cut tracks. If there's not much snow, find a high point and break out the optics. They are out there and some of the best hunts I have been on were in that time frame. I always hope for fresh snow so that I can put some miles on. You can definitely have a good hunt, though!
