I think I understand the MT application process but have been looking into how I can apply for archery elk and have rifle deer as a backup.

I am buying bonus points in MT for elk (I have 5) and plan to apply for an archery elk permit. I know I have to draw a General Elk or Big Game Combo first. But if I don't draw the elk permit then I'd like to rifle hunt deer in November with a general tag.

Is there anyway I can do this without applying for a General Big Game (Deer and Elk) combo?

Only way is to draw a tag on the alternate list

Or - select the option to keep the gen tag if you are drawn a are not drawn for permit it was the second selection on that page

Apply for the big game combo and for LE elk . If you don’t draw the LE elk permit then elect to get $400 (roughly the amount) back and keep the deer portion and go deer hunting . There’s a tab you can select for this option

This but if he does draw the LE elk tag he will have the deer tag as well. There isn’t a way to do what he’s talking about without applying for the combo.

Then just eat the deer portion of it . It’s only few hundred more and leaves that option open .

I don’t think he knew exactly how he could apply which he just admitted he didn’t that’s why I was explaining trying to let him know all the options

Yea I misunderstood, thought he for some reason just really didn't want to pay for or burn a deer tag. Completely agree, the combo option retaining the deer tag upon not drawing elk LE would be the way to go.
