Seafood diet behind 'Mighty Joe' monster baby

LONDON (AFP) - The mother of a 13-pound, 13-ounce (6.2-kilogram) baby boy -- the biggest born in Britain in seven years -- says the size of her newborn is due to her obsessive appetite for seafood during pregnancy.

Sara Griffin, a 25-year-old chef, said Tuesday that baby Joseph -- now nicknamed "The Mighty Joe" by his family -- grew extra-large with her diet of fish and seafood, "especially anything in vinegar".

"I used to eat a lot of meat but I went off it while I was pregnant," she said Tuesday.

"Instead I was eating a lot of fish and seafood, especially anything in vinegar. I was eating cockles, mussels, roll mop herrings, crab claws, anything I could get my hands on.

"There's no history of big babies in the family, so I can only think it must have been the seafood."

Griffin said her partner Mike was a fishmonger, meaning she had "a steady supply" of marine life during her pregnancy.

The baby was delivered two weeks early by Caesarean section in Merseyside, northwest England, after Griffin underwent 40 hours in labor attempting a natural birth.

Now two weeks old, Joseph weighs 14 pounds, one ounce (6.4 kilograms) and is sporting clothes for babies aged six to nine months.

He is reportedly the largest British baby born since Reece Curson weighed in at 14 pounds, three ounces (6.4 kilograms) in 1997.

The largest newborn recorded in the country was 15-pound, eight-ounce (6.9 kilogram) Guy Carr, in 1992.
