Over the next year, America’s largest fighting force is swapping its camouflage pattern. The move is a quiet admission that the last uniform — a pixelated design that debuted in 2004 at a cost of $5 billion — was a colossal mistake.

Soldiers have roundly criticized the gray-green uniform for standing out almost everywhere it’s been worn. Industry insiders have called the financial mess surrounding the pattern a “fiasco.”

What does this mean for a certain hunting camo pattern?

I don't believe this will hurt Sitka, as I'm guessing that's who you are referring to. They based there's on how ungulates see not humans. To the human eye the pattern can be easy to see but to the ungulate it blends very well. If you go to gore's optifade sight they have some good research on there on how the camo works with ungulates.

Are you refering to Multi-cam? Multi-cam was actually developed in the same testing that brought us the UCP disaster, but was passed over for political reasons. A company called Crye precision already had thousands of uniforms produced because they were the initial selection.

When they gave us Multicam back for AFG, it just made the joke they played on us with UCP even funnier.

Couldn't agree more. The idea is that humans eye sight requires you blend in/resemble the surroundings while the Optifade is based on resembling nothing at all. Definitely a better explanation on Gore's page. Bottom line is they didn't use the ACU pattern of the Army, but rather a micro-macro pattern combined with various shades of green/gray/light gray you get the idea. The ACU and ABU (Airmen Battle Uniform) have never been that complex and were more suited to the humans eyesight and blending in with actual physical things within your surroundings rather then looking like nothing at all. The ABU is kind of joke and helps us blend into cubicles more then anything, but at least the ACU was supposed to do that. Multi-cam has been around for a while now and used by operators mostly (Combat Control, etc.). Folks started to see the advantages and have been slowly phasing it in.

I'm no expert, just have experience with them.

I don't think this means anything for Sitka and Optifade. Sounds like two completely different issues. Just as I wouldn't use Optifade on a Polar Bear hunt in the artic, I wouldn't use the green/gray Army camo in a fight in the desert. I think that was more the point.

I've used Optifade in all kinds of terrains and am amazed at how well it blends in to the human eye even in areas that don't seem like i should (southern hard woods, open hillsides, etc). I'm a big fan of that stuff.

Noharleyet - That's awesome man! Did you grandmother sit on you when she brought you that piece of apple pie after work...hehehehe! Just kiddin' man. Isn't that how it is though. Thank god my ABU's keep me from being spotted at my computer all day.

THWAK - If I did, Montana would be lucky to have me. I could teach you a few things too! Hahahahha...seriously though the wife just came back from seeing the parents for a few weeks and already wants to go back out, but alas we'll prolly stay here in sweaty Illinois for deer season and come out to hunt in 2014. I gotta go over seas next summer. How did you do last year by the way? Filled all your tags again I'm sure.
