That's a fair take. But in a different world Steve Rinella could also take a hard look at what his business has become and the negative impacts it's had on most hunters. He could use his platform to advocate some of his brother's takes and adjust MeatEater's course. Hunt Quietly lays out what hunting non-profits, orgs and business do, or don't do, to help wildlife and improve hunter satisfaction. Sure MeatEater has taken a stance on corner crossing and have done a lot for this particular case (and maybe others) but they also are part of the reason why hunting hasn't gotten any better. One step forward two steps back.

I love my brother but if he negatively impacted my hunting I'd be f&cking pissed too.

Do you see the irony in a hunting brand promoting Matt's take??? I can guarantee meateater isn't having a negative impact on most hunters. Quite the opposite.

And now I'm curious, how has Steve & meateater negatively affected you as a hunter?

Not Steve but just this year an influencer hunted near where I usually do. It’s pretty obvious where it is located, when people saw the photos there wasn’t really a question. I was told no by that landowner. I moved on, but later a friend sent me their social media post and I went ah, makes sense. This spring I bumped into two influencers from Seattle hunting my favorite turkey spot. Steve hunted and spilled where he was in an area I’ve dreamt of hunting that already has tough draw odds. I don’t deny he’s been a big help on lots of access issues, but these examples have been aggravating to me personally. You may not feel negatively impacted in the same way I do.
 
Putting up YouTube podcast views as if anyone watches videoless podcasts no matter the producer is both disingenuous and stupid. All the podcast numbers come from Spotify/apple. I’m not at liberty to give numbers but it might surprise people, might not. He’s got 20k followers and growing. No one at HQ expects Meateater type numbers and it’s besides the point.

Lots of points Matt and others are making go over peoples heads really easily. You have an org like BHA who push R3 to satisfy their corporate donors now being led by a corporate donor lol. This is the same shit as when a FDA official retires to work for a pharmaceutical company they regulated. It’s a conflict of interest, and if that ain’t clearly obvious to you….I think Ryan believes everything he says and does as a good thing, and a lot is. But to pretend R3, over crowding, opportunity vanishing everyday, etc isn’t an issue for our way of life and that Meateater and BHA don’t contribute in big ways to these issues is straight bullshit!

No influencer will ever answer this question honestly - Why can’t they help fight issues like corner crossing and public land sales without filming dead animals or selling something? Giving away spots, how to video everything every single year! wtf. Why do Randy’s kill videos (he said so himself) have so many more views than the more important ones like conservation and policy? People cling to SM like it’s heroin. It’s been here for around 10-15 years yet to some it’s the only way to remain relevant, they must show strangers dying wildlife and exactly where and how to hunt to get the message out.

Are you actually being serious? Or are you just totally naive or completely ignorant to the dozens of spot burning episodes of meateater? Just becuse it may not have happened to your favorite elk or deer spot doesn’t mean it won’t in the near future. Steve even apologized to a bunch of hunters in X state over X tag he drew for an elk because of how much backlash he got. Then take a guess what he did 5 more times, the exact same thing in a different unit/state. He’s an asshole corrupted by money.

Why can’t influencers at the very least just stop spot burning? Why can’t they just go hunting without telling millions the mountains/town/region they are filming?

That’s where I struggle with Randy although I have came to appreciate the good he has done. The message wasn’t come to Montana to hunt it was come to this region and this is how you do it. Even flashed maps of where he was. So yes I have seen the direct impact of influencers.

Unfortunately - because thats what the audience chooses. Many episodes include a conservation topic.

I remember as a kid, guys in their 30s/40s wanting to hunt where they were.

I sympathize with a lot of Matts message. The primary one being the harvest of an animal shouldnt be cheapened to dopamine social media hits. Yet - i got a decent free education on public lands, how they were granted, how they've been sold off at the state level - and why its totally unsustainable for the state to manage that much land if the public wants to keep it. As such - i cant get behind Matts specific ire with FT.

I dont know if the public land for sale would have went through or not without some important advocates, some of whom are influencers. I can tell you id have ignorantly said transferring to the state is fine prior to the previously mentioned education.

Man - that makes me want to plan out a Broadus turkey hunt this spring. Got to give it to Rinella - his videos are excellent, watchable, and the “cast” is likable compared to most.

Not really much. Did watch a cool bear hunt video where he got skunked in a great local place, and another where he shot a busted up raghorn above the highway on a premium limited entry hunt. For some reason - masses still want to plan out a hunt to mimic that stuff.

The Rinella Effect

About 6 months back Meateater ran a show on his buffer zone elk hunt in MT. Always a tough permit to draw since there's only 5 tags. There's usually some apps from my household that go in for the buffer zone with no real anticipation to draw, as it's always been a less than 1% odds type...

everyone seems concerned, and rightfully so to some degree, about Meateater or Randy and Cam or Rogan. Yes, they have brought attention to areas and brought on new hunters and get thousands of views on social media and it can be debated whether or not it’s ethical but none you have a problem with the pages like this dumbass who flat out is making a mockery of rules, limits, baiting and game laws? Ok. I'm biased. I've been in the media biz for 35 years and have taken checks from MeatEater and others. I've unintentionally burned my own spots! But overall, I think the reason we are seeing more crowding and more difficulty drawing tags is because of habitat loss. There's just less space to fit us all. I know where I live, I can easily name a dozen places where I can no longer hunt, and a dozen places that are more crowded than they were when I moved here. Just bumped into new "no trespassing" signs on Saturday as yet another place that had been open to hunting for the last 12,000 years is now posted. The problem ain't Rinella or Randy. The problem is habitat loss in all its forms.
 
I think the challenge is to steer the power that media outlets have toward more habitat conservation and restoration. It will never get the clicks of some snuff film featuring another bull soaking up bullets, but it is what matters. (BTW, habitat loss includes habitat security lost to too much motorized access. When hunters expect to be able to drive to an elk and haul it out whole in a pickup or side-by-side, elk hunting loses.)
