Does anyone know what the maps are called that tell you where public and private land are or where I can purchase one?

Usually they are BLM maps....just google the "State" BLM and it should get you there....

Specifically they are called BLM Surface Management Status Maps. they come in 1:100,000 scale.

Buy at local BLM office or PLIC "Public lands Information Center" or a lot of local places such as surveying graphics places, sporting goods, etc. especially if you live in a western (mostublic land) state.
