Lined Pants - Too Warm?

Hopefully I will draw a tag this year and go on my 1st mule deer hunt. I feel like I have my layering systems figured out except for pants. I'm currently looking into the Core4Element Element pants, but I'm wondering if they might be too hot during the day. I like them because they are lined with brushed fleece, and have venting zippers on the thighs. I'll hopefully be hunting the Chalk Creek/East Canyon/Morgan-South Rich unit in Utah during the general rifle season in mid-late Oct. I'm 6'4" (240lbs), and I normally wear a 36x36 in jeans. I normally find 34 inseams to be too short. I'm usually no wimp when it comes to cold weather, but I really don't know what to expect in UT.

Or should I go with an unlined pant, and just wear merino wool leggings in the AM when it's colder?

I wold go with the long johns and unlined pants. I use the First lite Kanab pants by themselves for down to about 25 degree mornings. Colder than that I use the Allegheny Base Layer with the Kanabs. That combo has taken me to well below zero. Of course if you plan on doing alot of sitting your clothing choices can change dramatically. I move around around alot, stopping for only maybe an hour max and this combo has served me well. I think you will find that the lined pants are to warm for mountain hunting.

When I was in the Army they started issuing us silk base layers for cold weather to go under our ACU's and then Gor-Tex over that if need be and I stayed plenty warm in Ft Drum winters, and wasn't overly warm in the winter where I was in Iraq in the 30's or even Germany after I got blown up in wind and snow. Silk was a god send to use over our old poly pros. I, personally, wouldn't go with lined pants.

If you are here for the general season 22-30 October 2016, the temperature in that area will be 25's in the morning, to about 45 in the day. Minus any wind and stuff. The area is full of deer and some good ones. Good luck I'm just over the hills to the west in Syracuse and I'll be hunting the Box Elder unit.

I have the core4element Element pants and wear them 90% of the time for archery and rifle season. They are great during archery without long Johns, there are 2 vents on inner thighs. When it's cold, I just zip them up and usually have merino wool bottoms on as well. These pants work in a wide range of Temps and given the cost compared to other brands, they are very reasonable. I have had mine for 5 years, wear them at least for probably 4 weeks every year. I just now need to replace them cause I had a vent open and caught it on a twig. Tore the zipper now it won't stay closed.

Haven't been too hot in archery by themselves and are plenty warm in rifle with wool bottoms. Had them for 3 or 4 years now. They are starting to show a little wear on the inside of the bottom cuffs (no gators in archery season). Better than I expected for the price. Would buy again.

Well, those last two answers kind of muddied the waters a little bit. I'm still not sure which direction I'm going to go in, pants wise. I do anticipate a lot of hard hiking, but also quite a few hours glassing as well. I appreciate your input and opinions, and please continue to share them. Speeddmn, I hope you have a great hunt as well. UT seems to have a good mule deer population this year...er I mean no one else should apply there. I hear it's terrible!

everyone's going to be different. my dad wears warmer pants while I usually wear the same lightweight pants whether it's 75 or 5 degrees. difference is that i don't sit still much and warm pants make me sweat. i carry a super lightweight pair of waterproof pants that i throw on when i take time to sit down. about the only time i wear long johns or lined pants if when it get below 0.

The main reason I and a co worker are choosing Box Elder is simple, tons of land, very few people! Also they don't have a season that run from 6 oct to 22 oct to harass the deer. Actually looking just SW of Snowville area around Coyote Flats. I know we wont be far from roads, but we aren't after massive racks. First goal is to get my friends wife her fist deer, we were close last year on archery, less then 30 yards but only a neck shot so she didn't want to take it.

With 8 days of a rifle season, I don't see why we cant all fill the tags in one day, call it a win, get back to the houses and hang some flesh.

Now this years archery hunt, we are hoping to pull Wasatch or Central Mnts (manti), if not back to OTC and north slope.

Not sure exactly where Coyote Flats is, but then again place names can be tough. Have you been there or just map scouting at this point? I did locate Coyote Springs quad that covers the Wildcat Mtn/Hills that is SW of Snowville. The time I spent out there I did not see any deer, assuming we are talking about the same place. Though I did come across a black goat that was living out there all by his lonesome...

FWIW, I saw more deer on the west/north side of SR 30 above the towns of Park Valley and Rosette. It can be a bit tricky getting to the BLM/USFS land above there, but there are a few routes that will get you up to the Raft River Mtns. A bit further west the access to deer country gets a bit easier. Good luck and I'll be interested to hear how your hunt goes!

Yeah that's the place Coyote Springs. In the few years I've been here I haven't spent a lot of time in Box Elder, lest the western side. You will be amazed where I have seen deer, most people I go with look at me funny when I tell them where we are going and we see deer all the time. Main plan is to start in the Springs area and slowly make our way toward snowville area where the farm pivots start. If that dosent pan out then we can head toward Rosette area. I just know more people will be in that area vs the flat land.

Good luck! Most of my time there was during the summer and we often didn't stay around until dark. There's a few springs/water catchments on the south end of the Bovines that keep deer in that area. Might be worth a look-see if you feel the need to plow some new ground.

Take your shotgun as I know many of those areas, especially if you can find the guzzlers, have chukar in them.
