Weld a steel pipe onto the head, he won't break another one. Learn to aim very carefully and never overshoot the block of wood ever again. My 23 year old son managed to break the handles on my wedge and axe within 10 minutes this year.
I got a maul too, problem is the splitter is starting to wear out. Last few years I had to start switching to splitting left handed from time to time because my elbow would start to feel it if I didn't give it some rest.Damn. I got a maul. Hand splitting. mtmuley
I'm a stubborn son of a bitch. Gonna keep at it by hand. I'm only 61. mtmuleyI got a maul too, problem is the splitter is starting to wear out. Last few years I had to start switching to splitting left handed from time to time because my elbow would start to feel it if I didn't give it some rest.
The outfitter on my 2024 moose hunt called it "Dude Dust" It cranks up a wood-stove nicelyWe have rolls of lumber wrap at our shop. I lay it out in front of my log stack. Cut and roll it up. Off to the burn pile. I saved a bunch of sawdust to mix with diesel. Starts fires in the wall tent quick. mtmuley

I like to do it when it’s cold the most.
I do too - 6 cords a year. Just love swinging the axe and giving my body a great workout. I don't even look at as excercise.71, split all mine by hand.
I don’t look down on hard labor at all. I used to split 8+ cords a year due to being young and raising a family on one check.A few years ago, my daughter's boyfriend asked if I would mind if he split some firewood. He said he loved to split wood. I told him he was welcome to split all of it. He managed a couple of wheelbarrow loads.
It isn't for everyone.
Some people look down on someone who does hard physical work like they themselves are too smart for that. I don't think that there is anything hardheaded about enjoying physical labor. It makes more sense than going to a gym in my mind.
If I needed 17 cords of wood for heating, I'd be looking at alternative heating options. mtmuleyI don’t look down on hard labor at all. I used to split 8+ cords a year due to being young and raising a family on one check.
I’m very busy now. We split 15 new cords of wood and about 2 cords of old wood that was too big. How long would it take to split 17 cords of wood with a maul? I was looking for the most effective route physically and time wise. I’m behind on other house projects too.
It’s the math of buying a logging truck of logs. I should have 2+ years of wood. I’m hoping 3 years. I won’t be splitting or stacking wood next summer. If I needed 17 cords of wood for heating, I'd be looking at alternative heating options. mtmuley
Makes sense. I burn maybe 3 to 4 cords in a really cold year. Usually have a 2 cord cushion. Keeps me and the old blue Chevy in the woods. mtmuleyIt’s the math of buying a logging truck of logs. I should have 2+ years of wood. I’m hoping 3 years. I won’t be splitting or stacking wood next summer.
We’re 6 1/2 to 8 cords depending on the winter. We used to go out and cut 8-10 cords a summer. My wood crew abandoned me by vote a few years ago. Revolt.Makes sense. I burn maybe 3 to 4 cords in a really cold year. Usually have a 2 cord cushion. Keeps me and the old blue Chevy in the woods. mtmuley
