My 23 year old son managed to break the handles on my wedge and axe within 10 minutes this year.

Weld a steel pipe onto the head, he won't break another one. Learn to aim very carefully and never overshoot the block of wood ever again.

Go between an axe and maul. Indestructible. Pretty light, but sharp as heck. Originally i had doubts, but its all i use now.

I got a maul too, problem is the splitter is starting to wear out. Last few years I had to start switching to splitting left handed from time to time because my elbow would start to feel it if I didn't give it some rest.

We have rolls of lumber wrap at our shop. I lay it out in front of my log stack. Cut and roll it up. Off to the burn pile. I saved a bunch of sawdust to mix with diesel. Starts fires in the wall tent quick. mtmuley

The outfitter on my 2024 moose hunt called it "Dude Dust" It cranks up a wood-stove nicely

Because my dad bought a mortar mixer the day after I left the family tile business. I vowed I would not buy a wood splitter when the boys moved up and out.

I do too - 6 cords a year. Just love swinging the axe and giving my body a great workout. I don't even look at as excercise.

That's just hard headed splitting everything by hand in this day and age when hydraulic splitters are so easy to come by and economical.

It isn't for everyone.

Some people look down on someone who does hard physical work like they themselves are too smart for that. I don't think that there is anything hardheaded about enjoying physical labor. It makes more sense than going to a gym in my mind.

I’m very busy now. We split 15 new cords of wood and about 2 cords of old wood that was too big. How long would it take to split 17 cords of wood with a maul? I was looking for the most effective route physically and time wise. I’m behind on other house projects too.

It’s the math of buying a logging truck of logs. I should have 2+ years of wood. I’m hoping 3 years. I won’t be splitting or stacking wood next summer.

Makes sense. I burn maybe 3 to 4 cords in a really cold year. Usually have a 2 cord cushion. Keeps me and the old blue Chevy in the woods. mtmuley

We’re 6 1/2 to 8 cords depending on the winter. We used to go out and cut 8-10 cords a summer. My wood crew abandoned me by vote a few years ago. Revolt.
