Kava and Waka

O.K. so I was talking to this contractor at work today. Interesting guy, says he was a house in Fiji and goes there a lot when he can. I asked him about what the beer is like and he said they don't have any. He says they don't drink booze but drink Kava instead. Said it is a kind of root that is grown there and dried and ground up and used like tea to get a "buzz"
Anyone ever tried this stuff? I looked it up on google and it is used in the Hawaiian islands too. perfectly legal as well and can get it here too.
