We are going to visit in-laws over the Christmas week and was wondering if anybody knew if there was a deer season still open and any tags left over?Just wondering.

yes late muzzleloader will be open. You could possibly pick up a antlerless tag depending on the county. You wouldn’t be able to get a buck tag.

Dummy question, but I am assuming you can’t use a bow during that season?

I believe you can use a bow during the late muzzleloader season, but must wear orange. Look on the IDNR’s website for info about a “Nonresident Holiday Antlerless” tag. They’re pretty affordable if there are still any left for the county you’re hunting.

Most Non-res tags need to be applied for earlier in the year but I'm not sure about the antlerless tags since none are available in the northern part of the state. You can use any form of muzzleloader, handguns with barrels of a certain length, and archery gear. As far as I know you do not have to wear orange while bowhunting during the late muzzy season, I never have, although on public land it may not be a bad idea! This season begins Dec. 23 and goes until Jan. 10. It's all about food sources. Contact the local DNR biologist in the area you will be hunting and he can tell you about any foodplots that were planted on public land. Some areas have farmers that plant corn or bean on public land in exchange for leaving a certain percentage of it behind for the wildlife. Other areas will plant turnips, sunflowers, and winter wheat.

Should be able to buy an antlerless tag for the nonresident holiday season, no?

Edit: Sorry, I see madtom beat me to the punch.

How did it go?
Thanks for asking.
The deer were pretty spooked due to being the end of the season. Saw a few on the first day as the sun came up, but they didn’t come close enough. We never saw any deer after that. Some of the locals said the warm weather was kinda messing things up. Maybe next year!
