I would only do the 175gr if I had a higher more better rifle so I could utilize longer barrels and twist and all that

I probably would run the 175s. I’m sure it would be pretty anemic but can be done.

Honestly, I think you’d better stick to factory ammo. Find something that groups good and use it for everything.

And yes the 308 is the parent cartridge for 243, 7-08, 260Rem, 338 federal just to name a few. I made a 270-08 out of the 308. Only your imagination limits you.

Depending on your taste, building a rifle is not that expensive. You don’t have to have the most expensive components on the market.
Talk with a remear manufacturer ( Manson, JLG…) have a remear made and a Gunsmith.
Buta Bing- Buta boom. Your shooting something You designed.
Savage component Work and are Not very expensive.

A 270 caliber bullet, shooting out of a necked down 308win case. Up to 130gr bullet it’s just slightly slower than a270win. It’s a shame that Winchester hasn’t come out with it.

Interesting. I am building a 270-08 off 700LA. Is yours a LA? Barrel length? Are you using 7-08 brass? Have you shot Hammers out of it?

The 27-08 is a great cartridge, very efficient and works very well. I designed this around the 133 Apex Afterburner. 2.950 Max. And yes I downsized 7-08
Lapua. Rl-17 will get me over 3000fps and I am running them at 3000.
125 Cutting Edge Maximus
95 TTSX and 110 Accubond.
Last year I did resize the 277 fury and working very well.
3 firings on the Lapua and still holding primers.

Last week I started talking to JLG and will be making a reamer for a 270/308Ai 40*
The fury has 35* and will be designed around the fury case.
3.100 max with 170 EOL.

This will Easily compete with the 270 Win up to 130 gr bullets.
Short action.

If you reload, essentially the sky is the limit.

I do load the 100gr Sierra HP Varmint bullet in my 7mm-08AI, 284 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag.

For heavier bullets the standard 1:9-1:9.25 twist will handle all but the heaviest bullets.
The problem with the heavy bullets in the 7mm-08 is the bullet length and the available case capacity.
Namely that the long heavy bullets intrude into the powder column if you don't throat ream the chamber to seat them out further.

That and the case capacity is on the small side for the heavy bullets. You'd be better off going to the 284 Win or 280 Rem.

Handloading also lets you do the wildcat and obsolete cartridges.

Wildcats like the 27-08, 25 Souper, 25-350 Rem Mag, 25-284, 7mm WSSM.

Obsolete cartridges like 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 25 WSSM, 7mm WSM, 7mm RSAUM.
