Shortest version for context:
  • Cousin from CA was going to be working near Howe ID this fall.
  • Cousin put son and self in for Unit 51 Nov Elk.
  • Son drew the tag...it's his first ever elk tag.
  • It's become obvious Cousins lungs are not up to the task of scouting and hunting this fall due to recent bout with covid.
  • I'm going to take the boy on his hunt.
  • I have Salmon Zone B tag and 36B deer tag AND a 4th season elk tag in Colorado.
  • I live in Utah.
  • I just came back from a 5 day pre-scout trip. Drove every vehicle capable road on the entire west side and northeast sides of the unit in order to get a general sense of the unit.
I'm trying to figure out if I should take him should take him the 1st part of November or the last part of November. Due to my own work schedule I've got to make a decision on which hunts I'm gonna need to give up in the next few days to make sure I can give adequate attention to the boys hunt.

You folks with experience in the region, What's your advice on which half of November I should focus on?

PM if you feel the need.

Dry Creek Canyon is beautiful. But that road was too nasty for me. I don't have the nerves or experience to get a trailer back in there.
