The hunter was 32 and died of a heart attack. It’s been a rough month for outsdoors people in Idaho. Two hunters killed in gun accidents at vehicles and two fishermen drowned on Henry’s Lake.

Stay safe.

Sad. It’s a very familiar story to a 32 year old man who died on mountains I walk often in 2011 in our little town.

He killed a large bull, and died right after. I never knew him but know folks who did, and as fellow father-of-three, elk hunter, and human with heartbeats not guaranteed, I visit his grave regularly in the cemetery above our fire hall.

Worth thinking about and sad for their familes. Who hasn't joked that a packout might be their last. Or even though it more seriously in their head when huffing and puffing up a mountain, at max exertion, but still loving that Type 2 fun. We relate to what we know. Many people will have same thing happen while mowing their lawn, cutting a tree, or shopping. I had a dream the other night about hunting in a lightning storm, I was thinking about the two young guys in Colorado, and even in my dream I had to just pick a tree to sit under and hope for the best and you just accept that life has risks and its always a known trade-off for people like us while hunting.

It reminds me of how often people die snow shoveling. I’m not minimizing any of these deaths. God bless them and all of you. Attempt to head into the woods in the best condition you because you never know.
