Anyone ever hunt area 70 in Idaho for elk? My hunting partners and I are thinking about it for either this year or next and we are looking for some first hand knowledge. What is the terrain like? How is the elk population? Plenty of public land access? Is there much hunting pressure?

thanks....Jeff

What hunt?

The elk population in the Bannock Zone, which includes unit 70, would not be considered "high density". There have been several years of over the counter rifle cow hunts (still available) and the numbers have been hammered.

That being said there are still areas with good elk populations and if you can hunt archery, or draw one of the 2 bull hunts (rifle) then there are still some good bulls to be had.

Lots of public lands but there are private ranches that both hold elk and block access to elk country. Terrain is steep roadless mtns down to CRP and irrigated fields. Lots of hunting pressure for the over the counter hunts (have not hunted archery). Not much pressure for the controlled bull hunts.
