Read another instance of a hunter in Boise county passing away while in the process of packing out an elk

It’s been a very bad year for hunting related fatalities
 
One November when I was a kid, in the late 70s/early 80s, my dad and I found a snowed-in pickup truck in that part of unit 6. i want to say Windy Creek? We reported it. Turned out it was left by an elk hunter who was caught in a storm while packing out quarters. They found his body in the spring. That taught me a lesson early about hypothermia. Never leave your rig without good clothes and the means to sit out a wet, cold night. Bears get the hype but hypothermia will get you. Condolences to the family.

Some ask why I have a 25lb day pack. Layers, layers, layers. Moisture barrier.

Early wet snow is the worst. It goes right through everything.
 
These stories speak to staying calm and thinking through decisions. I am judging no one’s decisions, but thinking about myself. What would I do? No one is above it.

I once made a decision to walk across the Big Hole as a kid. I had walked myself into a serious pickle. Slowly work the river for miles and miles in the dark, or cross to the road? It was mid-season and cold as hell. I survived… I was lucky. Thank God I didn’t fall. I used to think I could do anything, now I’ve learned anything can happen to anyone. Over confidence = Danger
 
25 yrs ago I was hunting after closing up the cabin for the year. 1st good Sierra storm of Oct and I found a trail and waited 10 min and shot a decent buck. Gutted it and got it in the back of the Tacoma. Soaked and cold I headed down the hill at noon.

18 inches of snow driving out and a steady stream of guys heading UP......7 hunters went missing. 5 found near their trucks and the other 2 in spring.

It snowed 5 feet that night and another 2 the next day.
 
Ugh hate to hear it....tortures the families.
We got called out on a M2A for a hunter lost in the Estecada area SE of Portland recently. Really shitty ground and poor weather to boot. Their SO just called off the search on Friday after nearly two weeks.
Two days back home and called out again for another hunter in our own county, seems to be that kinda year 😖
 
Tough way to go.......... hypothermia.
Very sad for those passed and their friends and family
 
When I was 9 my uncle 19 took my up sledding near Mt Baker. This is 1978. 2 wheel drive Chevy. My uncle chose a logging road to sled and up we went. 5 or 6 hours later the snow was really coming down. When he went to turn around we got stuck. Really stuck chains wouldn't work.
For 2 nights he would turn truck on to charge battery and heat cab. On the 3rd night we finally saw lights coming up the road. Mt Baker search and rescue. I can still see the lifted jeep coming around the road through the trees in knee waist deep. Thank god we had several old school scratchy wool blankets and food. Somewhere I have the newspaper article.

Wrap up, I always try and give to the volunteers who go out search for people. I have done it myself because they saved us.

And as a SAR member I just want you to know that your support is MUCH appreciated and the only way we can continue.

Can’t speak for other states but in ours (Oregon) under ORS 404.110, the sheriff of each county is legally responsible for search and rescue (SAR) activities within their jurisdiction BUT there is no obligation to BUDGET for it 😳. With the exception of our trucks and gas, we are fully self-funded!

Hopefully people will support before they need it. I started once I became an adult. Even little things. You see them at gas station, buy their gas, restaurant food, supplies. Even just a few dollars help. While I am not an official member I have been asked because I knew the area. Ready anytime. Thanks MarvB for helping save people.

Our little town (Prineville) steps up quite a bit to help us; we have multiple firearms raffles every year, a huge sandwich feed right before the rifle deer opener, and stay as active as we possibly can (time wise) pursuing grants. We also do programs at the schools (Hug-A-Tree) and for those with memory related or autism issues (Project Lifesaver). Randy (Big Fin) comes down to Redmond at the Sport Show about every year and I try to get folks to his seminars and in turn to our raffle/information booth. It "takes a village" lol.

We run an academy for about (depending on need) 8-12 prospective new members each spring and I think folks would be surprised at the amount of "grey hair" involved. It's one of those things that age can't really define- some of our best people are seniors but they excel at things like mapping, comms, IC organization, fundraising, etc., AND (since retired) actually have the time and desire to put in the work! Thanks again @belshawelk for your support in your area!
