Help Me Legalize Semiauto Rifle Big Game Hunting In Pennsylvania

When shooting more than one animal, there’s a noticeable advantage. I’ve taken my BAR .270 more than a few times when doe hunting. Carried it the other day hog hunting. Almost got a second hog.
my best has been 2 deer in a matter of seconds. They came over the hill right behind each other, and I took them both down. They slid into the woodline 20 yards away and were piled up on top of each other. I've had times where there's a chance at 3, but couldn't connect with all 3.

So using this same anti logic, why do we have compound bows now? Why do we have crossbows now? Rangefinders, Kestrels and dial up optics so you can shoot into next zip code?

We all can find something we disagree with but it's a choice not a requirement. Change the station if you don't like the program.

I can understand the desire to not want to advocate for it. I'd be against it if it were currently illegal in my home state (its not) and I'd be against making them illegal now when they've always been legal here. Might not make perfect sense but it's how I feel about it.

Pa did a great study on bullet " ricochets & terminal range" Senator Lisa Boscola pushed and was instrumental because growing up she remembered her dad saying a safe shot is a safe shot regardless if its an arrow or a slow big bullet or a small fast bullet. Well we have to many hunters afield per/sq/mile and way to many areas with Houses and rounds splitting the woodlots up. I am afraid extra bullets will fly if semi auto rifles are used and that will increase the number of unsafe shots.

The study proved exactly opposite of your statement. I used this study for support of the straight wall rifle regulation in Michigan as the author of the straight wall regulation. The 12ga shotgun with sabot was proven to be the worse firearm for downrange safety. The semi automatic shotgun is LEGAL in PA.

Yes you are correct I never finished my point due to a thing called work. Yes the slugs have a tendency to bounce along. Semi shotguns are NOT legal statewide for deer hunting.

As a life long PA resident I dont advocate semi auto rifles in PA. Our tradition of deer and bear drives and the next generation of xboxers is not a great combo that needs semiautomatic added. I think there is quite a few responsible folks that could use them with no issue. I also think there is more folks that probally shouldnt be handling any gun much less a semiautomatic. This year at PA bear camp we had a young long time camp participant bring a college buddy. This buddy checked out with his hunting background to participate. At 22 he had hunted big game with his dad all over. I was suprised when we discussed the drives that he volunteered to be a driver all day. He wasn't comfortable shooting moving animals or with drivers walking towards him. Mad respect for that young man. I say that to say. We grew up doing it. We now have a generation that has mostly not. Adding a semiautomatic to that mix isn't wise imo. Personally I would love to. But not because I would use it like a semi. I enjoy the platform. I will add. Best bear drive gun. Semiauto 12 gauge with short barrel and iron sites.

All just my personal opinion

I don't get it. Some are petrified of a semi-auto but embrace deer drives? A lot of states ban deer drives due to safety. PA already allows semi-auto shotgun which BTW a PA Ballistic Study performed by a Military Certified Ballistics Lab has already established as a higher risk than a 30-06 bolt action rifle with 180gr.

Speak with data. The data has established ballustic performance of rifles versus shotguns versus muzzleloaders.

Its ok to not want to use one, its not ok to stop someone else "cause I don't like it". If that is the case, mandate single shot for everyone.

I think the PA thing is far bigger then semi-auto. I think we have bigger problems to solve as a hunting culture in PA. Also a huge difference between not voting for it and blocking it. I won't block it. I just as an initial thought wouldnt vote for it. Its not about the gun. Its about the people. Our annual bear camp only is with folks that have been checked out. We have uninvited some. Not invited others. You have to trust the guys. While a bear drive sounds dangerous in theory it really isn't. We are not talking flat terrain. Shooters are set in positions they can safely shoot. Everyone knows where everyone is at. Typically the drivers are not walking directly at the Standers. And the standers are not shooting toward the drivers.
