Gunsafes

I've got a Cannon with the keypad and manual door opener that I keep all of my expensive guns in. I also have another one my Dad had made years ago by a friend out of steel plate that isn't fire rated and all the cheaper MLs and rimfires are kept in it. The door lock area is completely enclosed with heavy steel around a special heavy duty lock that you put a key into the bottom half of the lock and it drops off to allow the top of it to be removed for access. If anyone would try to get into either one of them, they better have a heavy duty torch and an hour or two to do it.

Like muleyfanatic stated, it seems safes only hold about half the claimed capacity. I think Pendleton Safes makes one with a carousel gun rack, looks like it would make getting to any particular gun nice & easy, but I have no idea how expensive they are by comparison.

NYH, Check on line. There are a couple of places who actually make safes for the major brands, who are willing to sell you a safe, delivered to your front door at about 60% of the cost. They aren't fancy with the pretty pictures on them, but the interiors are complete and the fire rating is at least as good as the major brand names you pay more for and get the same safe.

As you have been waiting for, here are my thoughts, please ignore all the above nonsense.

  • You don't have to get rid of the old one
  • Keep two safes, that way you have room for buying more guns, always leave one spot open for the next gun. If need be, buy a 3rd safe.
  • Fire ratings are nonsense
  • If you want to be protected from loss due to fire, up your insurance policy
  • Primary purpose of a safe should be to keep the guns safe from your grandkids curiosity.
  • Weight is your friend, add lead/iron to the floor.

You know how it works Jose...one of your kids needs something so you give em what you have and buy another.

....went with the 6 footer in lieu of the 5....upgraded the upgrade so to speak. Was an easy path off the garage to the cave but still took 4 of my guys to wrestle it off the trailer and get it thru a 30" door frame while tilting 700 lbs on a dolly to clear the garage door glides. Installing the expansion anchors tomorrow.

I think it'll do.

the only thing I don't care for on some of the Cannon's is that if you have a gun in the very back you have to dig to get to it. . .same way with my Winchester safe. . .oh well. The Cannon's are a good looking safe for sure! Congrats bud!

I'm in the market too. My safe lives in a detached (unheated) garage, the electronic one doesn't do so well in there in winter time. Next purchase will have a combination lock.
