I'm looking at adding a rectangular griddle to my campbox. Size to fit on my 2 burner Coleman stove or cook over a fire.

Wondering if folks have a preference for cast iron or Carbon Steel and what is worth spending money on ...

Anything you can do on a griddle you can do in a cast iron skillet, plus it's more versatile and has other uses.

Is it worth spending the extra?

IMO, For what you are doing I would definitely go with the steel over cast iron. I love cast iron pans but the steel griddles are better in this application. Easier to clean and maintain too. Just less fuss all the way around with the steel griddle vs cast iron griddles. I have had a griddle get a little rust on it and it was super easy clean up with flap disk and back in action.

I've got a cast iron lodge griddle and a carbon steel camp chef griddle.

I like the camp chef more than the lodge. I can cook more, and different things, but I'm also using the 2 burner camp chef stove, not the coleman. My griddle takes up 1 burner so I can still use a skillet or make coffee, etc.

@Steiny77 isn't necessarily wrong either. A good 12" skillet can do everything. But, if I want pancakes, eggs and bacon for 6, I can do all of that on my griddle a lot easier than I can my skillet.

You can't go wrong with Lodge products. Either will work, but the steel will be lighter and I think you'll like it more. You still need to worry about rust, etc, but they are easier to maintain than cast. The bespoke cast iron industry is sniffing iron fillings for the prices they want.
