Quick report on our Wyoming antelope hunt. This was my third year back to a unit that has tags, but is a bit tough to hunt. Typical unit with reasonable amounts of public land, but very difficult access to said public land. You really can’t drive any of it, so you better be willing to walk and let your glass do some work too. Also, when opportunities present, you have to go after them, as you can’t drive down the road and shop for your next antelope. But, I like the unit, and you get opportunities as you work for them.
This year I had a few others join me, including two of them where this would be their first time big game hunting. We all ended up doing okay. I filled my two doe tags the first evening. The second day was a bust for everyone, with lots of ground covered, but limited sightings. The third day we filled four tags, including does for the two newcomers. The last day we filled one more buck tag. All told, we filled 7 out of 9 tags, and everyone had their chances. We also bumped into four rattle snakes, all of whom were kind enough to let us know they were there, so they got a pass.
I have enough points to draw a unit with greater opportunity next year, but I am pretty sure I will be back to this place for my doe tags, for the fun, and for the love of this country.
