Visiting my wife who works seasonally in Alaska. Whenever she is busy I go out fishing. I had a fun afternoon fly fishing for Sockeye.
It’s a tricky place to get one landed. I had lost a few and had to release one the was foul hooked. Had kept a couple though and decided to call it.
At the vehicle I didn’t have a good spot to set my rod down so I set it on the roof. I put things away and drove off. After a bit I heard something slide off the roof. Knowing I just dumped my fly rod on the highway I pulled off. Walking to it it looked ok. Then the first vehicle I’d seen in 2 hours drove by smoking it.
Surprisingly the rod appears to be usable though has a weak spot near an insert. The reel is demolished. I thought I could save the line but of course it got cut in two places.
Luckily wasn’t an expensive set up but still stings. After fishing so long I never lost a rod in a stupid manner. I guess my number was up. I won’t be doing that again.
