"Federal wildfire risk mitigation and suppression responsibilities currently are split across fiveagencies in two departments: the U.S. Forest Service in USDA and BIA, Bureau of LandManagement, USFWS, and NPS in DOI. This dispersed nature of the Federal mission createssignificant coordination and cost inefficiencies that result in sub-optimal performance. The Budgetreforms Federal wildland fire management to create operational efficiencies by consolidating andunifying the Federal wildland fire responsibilities into a single new Federal Wildland Fire Service atDOI, including transferring USDA’s current wildland fire management responsibilities. The newservice would be distinct in command and appropriations from existing wildland firefighting agenciesand would streamline Federal wildfire suppression response, risk mitigation efforts, and coordinationwith non-Federal partners to combat the wildfire crisis."
