Freezer in Fairbanks

I don’t know if they freeze for customers. There is a meat shop up there that I met and they make great product. Worth calling to find out.

Try some of the hotels. Golden North Inn has a freezer for hunters and fishermen and accepts dogs for a fee. Hot shower, bed and a freezer before you drive home.

I think the motel we stayed at last fall had freezer space, I'll try to figure out the name, but maybe other motels have similar? Edit, Dave beat me to it, it was golden north that we stayed at pretty sure.

Dry ice on top in a good cooler will freeze hard in my experience. Reload as needed.

I've used hotel freezers on Kodiak and the rates were reasonable . Fairbanks however, is very pricey. $350 a night seems to be the going rate. For that price I could buy a small chest freezer in Fairbanks and plug it in at campground rates.

What is your guesstimate for a date for the hotel? Golden North looks to be $200 or so.

Over on RS they are recommending Alaska Trophy Express. Book early.

Also "Santa's Smokehouse"

There is an interesting thread for this. They also name "A guy named Dave" Go figure

Sometime after Sep 1.
I'm looking to coincide caribou with waterfowl opener on Sep 1.
No way I could pick a hotel date.
No need to pick a day. I went to their website and looked at rates. September 12th the rates drop from $234 down to $213. Travel websites can probably drop that even more. It's an option for one night to relax and get your stuff frozen enough to add a little dry ice and head for home.

Not much difference $213 - $234 but it's a big difference from $350

Lots of times when we traveled I searched for a place a day ahead of time or even the day of. I'm sure if you looked on Expedia or something like that you could knock the price down under $200. I couldn't see on the website about the freezer so maybe a few phone calls or emails to hotels up there might narrow it down to those that do have freezer space for guests. Have fun and good luck. If nothing else, dry ice should do the trick.

Also, you are going to want a big freezer to spread everything out. If you pack it in a standard chest freezer it’s not going to be frozen below the top layer even after 24 hours.

Interior Alaska Fish (Santa Smokehouse) is who I'm probably going to use. Im not sure what their rates are though, I have to call and confirm space before I leave for Fairbanks tomorrow. I'll post later today when I find out the rate.

Thanks
I called Delta Meats and they said they no longer process caribou because of the filthy meat that would come in.
I asked if they would be willing to freeze my cut and vacuum sealed meat and they said yes.
However, as of yesterday my travel plan is on hold and not looking good as my brother-in - law who lives on the Mexican side of the border is hospitalized.
He has been very sick and reluctant to go to the hospital but was finally forced to go by his brother. What they thought might be gall stones is looking more like liver cancer.
No stones found but a “Dark Spot” on his liver was found. The hospital is incredibly slow moving with him. My wife is headed there today and hopefully we’ll know more but it doesn’t look good.

Yup. Buy a $100 freezer on Craigslist, plug it into one of the parking lot outlets for a block heater, then sell it when you leave for whatever you can get.

I’m driving
The caribou doesn’t need to drive. Air cargo will ship it for .70 a pound and keep it frozen. Probably take 3-5 days for it to land at your house and now you don’t have to hassle with meat or horns. They may even store it for a extra day or two for you if someone wouldn’t pick it up if your still driving.
